From a CNN story:

Rather than construct a wall, 63 percent of Latinos in Texas support a pathway to citizenship as a means of addressing illegal immigration.

As a means of addressing? Addressing as in solving? Help me understand where I’m going wrong here.

1. Too many people are here illegally.
2. Solve that by making them not illegal anymore.
3. People in Mexico see how it works.
4. People in Mexico do anything to get to America.

So basically, based on this system, the way to fix illegal immigration from Mexico is to make it legal. Technically speaking that solves it immediately, but in reality all it does is merge our two countries.

Here’s the problem: Mexicans are fleeing Mexico for a reason. And when they flee they bring that reason with them to America. People who come here need to become something else upon getting here, and that’s not happening.

Instead they’re recreating the exact situation they escaped from. The only difference is that it feels better here because the infrastructure is still better — for now. But over time the U.S. will start to look more and more like Mexico in terms of culture and ideals. And at that point everyone — including the Mexicans — are going to look around and say, “Wow, this place is a dump.”

Immigration is great, and any external people can be reforged into the adopting country, but it takes time and pressure. Pressure is what we are no longer applying. Pressure means having an overwhelming and unifying CENTRAL identity toward which everyone moves.

But we don’t have that anymore, or at least it’s very dormant right now. I just wonder when we’re going to figure out how big of a mistake we’re making.:

My ideal world is the one Kimya Dawson sings about. I wish I could be as free as she is. So much of what I am is a construct designed to interface with an ugly reality. Life would be much better if we didn’t need such things.

I like to find (a) simple solutions (b) to overlooked problems (c) that actually need to be solved, and (d) deliver them as informally as possible, (e) starting with a very crude version 1, then (f) iterating rapidly.

I’d say that’s a pretty solid way of approaching entrepreneurship in today’s tech world.

Wow. She even speaks like Barrack — an interesting observation given an article I read a while back that said people who spend large amounts of time together start to match in many ways — even facial expressions, etc.

Anyway, very inspiring. I truly look forward to her being our first lady.

So I’m trying to learn git to allow for easy editing of my site using Textmate, and to just learn git because it’s an intriguing tool in general.

Anyway, I have my main web directory in a repository, and I’m able to clone that down to my workstation using the git:// protocol. I’m also able to open the resulting directory in Textmate, but after that things git a bit fuzzy.

First, I’m not seeing a strong tie between Textmate and git. Using subversion svn was automatically aware if I modified a file using Textmate. But using git I have to save my changes for them to affect git.

I’m also not able to push back to the server yet using Textmate. I got it to “work” using the command line, but I didn’t see the change propagate to the server side.

Anyone have this working correctly? I just want to be able to edit my site on my local box and then upload it to the server when I want to publish.:
