MacBookPro Disappointment

Well, I was warned.
People told me not to buy the initial version of the Intel laptops, but I figured Apple’s been doing this for a long time — how bad could it be?
Well, this thing is overheating like a mofo. Within 15 minutes it’s too hot to touch over the keyboard and anywhere on the bottom towards the front. This wouldn’t be such a big deal, except my CDRom stops working because of it!
I’ve been trying to install WoW for two days now and it won’t install. By the time I get to the third CD (out of 4) the drive stops working and the box is virtually on fire.
So, I got burned — figuratively. All the hype — all the blogging — all the anticipation — and my system doesn’t even function. I can’t install anything from the CD drive and the box makes me hot just using it.
I called Apple and they told me they’d get back to me in like 4 business days, and that if I call them they’d return my voice mail within 2 business days. Whatever.
If this doesn’t get solved like in the past tense I’m going back to my G4 and getting my money back. This has been nothing but a huge dissapointment.
So sad, too…the system is just awesome otherwise. So fast…so beautiful. I just wish it functioned completely and didn’t cause third degree burns. Baagh!
– (03.09.06) Edit — Well, Apple has stepped up and done the right thing. They are replacing my MBP outright. Way to go, Apple. (03.16.06) Edit — I’ve received the new system and the optical drive works flawlessly. Awesome!

Hey try to make the cds into .dmg or .iso images, then mount them and install from them so that you dont have to use the optical drive.
Let me know if it works :)

If it’s too hot to touch at the front of the case return it. Your fans are not working. Mine gets real hot right near the screen where it should, but not on the keyboard and definately not at the front. This was tested under full load.

you could always put it on top of an ice pack (and a towel so things don’t get wet).
oooo… Do Macs make you wet too, anonymous?

I hope mine doesn’t do this. I ordered last week. Same specs as netjunkie above :) Good that Apple is doing something about it. Sucks that you had to experience such an issue.

Yeah, I’m sure yours’ll be fine. Prolly just a fluke…

I’ve had my macbook pro for about 1 week and a half and I haven’t had any heating problems. My laptop is perfectly cool. However, I keep mine ontop of a antec computer fan and it works fine. Also I am brand new to the mac way of life. I have had other issues but not with heating. primarily I’ve had wireless issues with reception. My hard drive has 15 gigs of space that I can not account for and have no idea where they went.

[...] Well, it’s been nearly a month now since I received my new MacBookPro. As a few of you may know, I had to return my first unit due to a borked optical drive. I was quite upset about it at the time, but was - and am - ultimately happy with the overall experience due to the way that Apple handled it. [...]
